Shift Pattern: 37.5 hours per week

Duties:

  • Be accountable for the midwifery budget and contribute to the effective budgetary management across the directorates of the Division
  • Contribute to identifying and delivering the annual cost reduction/improvement plans for the Division
  • Work with the directorate management team to develop business plans for capital development and also to prioritise capital expenditure within each financial year
  • Ensure that care delivered to women and their babies is safe, evidence based and meets their individual needs
  • Manage the midwifery service, encompassing both acute and primary care settings to provide a seamless integrated pathway of care for a service that spans pregnancy, delivery and the postnatal period
  • Take the lead for HR issues in respect of midwifery staff and ensure HR policies are adhered to, paying particular attention to the effective management of sickness/absence
  • Ensure all staff have annual appraisals and personal development plans and that succession planning and leadership development is in place
  • Be the line manager for the Midwifery Matrons, Consultant Midwife, Deputy Head of Midwifery, safeguarding midwives and the safeguarding nurse for children; through line management will develop a culture of accountability and effective performance management throughout the service
  • Participates in the midwifery managers on call rota and the Divisional manager on call rota
  • Undertake relevant tactical training

Requirements for the Head of Midwifery role:

  • Registered Midwife; currently on NMC Register
  • MSC level midwifery qualification / post graduate management qualification
  • Be a PMA of Midwives currently recorded with the NMC (or to be commenced within six months of appointment)
  • Leadership qualification or proven experience of working at a senior level
  • Significant evidence of continued professional development in a relevant subject
  • Significant relevant and recent post registration experience as practising midwife and nurse
  • A proven track record of operational service management at a senior level in an acute hospital environment, including staff management, financial management and change management
  • Clear and thorough knowledge of midwifery issues, including statutory frameworks and national policies
  • Previous involvement of multi-agency working across the health economy at a senior level
  • Proven skills and knowledge in all areas of clinical practice
  • Proven experience in dealing with human resources issues such as sickness, recruitment and retention, disciplinary matters
  • Working knowledge of safeguarding procedures
  • Experience of presenting complex data at senior meetings to a range of audiences
  • Demonstrable previous success in leading and delivery change and performance with and through clinical teams, by engaging them in the strategic direction and delivery plans, establishing clear work priorities with them, delegating effectively ensuring a capability to deliver monitoring performance and giving feedback
  • Proven ability to analyse complex problems and to develop and successfully implement practical and workable solutions to address them
  • Ability to think and plan strategically, tactically and creatively and to prioritise work programs in the face of competing demands
  • A strong sense of personal and team accountability coupled to a clear understanding of the boundaries around delegated authority
  • Ability to collaborate constructively with internal and external partners to create the conditions for successful partnership working
  • A good understanding of the changing NHS environment
